Introduction

Timing can make or break a safari. The best time to visit Kenya depends on what you want to see and experience.

Do you dream of witnessing the Great Migration river crossings? Prefer fewer crowds and lower rates? Want the best weather for photography?

This guide breaks down Kenya’s safari seasons month by month to help you choose the perfect time for your adventure.

Kenya Safari Seasons at a Glance

Kenya has two main seasons that affect wildlife viewing and pricing.

Dry Season: June to October
This is the peak safari season. Wildlife congregates around water sources, making animals easier to spot. Vegetation is sparse, improving visibility. This is also when the Great Migration reaches the Maasai Mara. Expect higher prices and more visitors.

Wet Season: November to May
This is the low and shoulder season. The landscape is lush and green. Bird watching is excellent. Many animals give birth, attracting predators. Prices are lower and crowds are thinner. The rains bring two distinct periods.

Month by Month Breakdown

January

The short dry season follows the November rains. Weather is warm and mostly dry. Wildlife is concentrated around water sources. This is an excellent time for game viewing with fewer tourists than peak season. It is also calving season for wildebeest in the southern Serengeti, though the herds have not yet reached Kenya.

Best for: Comfortable weather, good wildlife viewing, avoiding peak crowds.

February

Similar to January, February offers warm, dry conditions. It is one of the best months for game viewing in Amboseli and Tsavo. The wildebeest calving continues in the Serengeti, with predators actively hunting.

Best for: Dry weather, excellent predator action in southern Serengeti (Tanzania side), great for Amboseli elephants.

March

The long rains begin, usually in late March. Afternoon showers are common but rarely disrupt the entire day. The landscape becomes lush and green. This is a good time for budget travelers as prices drop.

Best for: Low season rates, green landscapes, bird watching.

April

This is the peak of the long rainy season. Heavy afternoon rains are frequent. Some roads and camps become difficult to access. However, this is the absolute low season with the lowest prices. Photography can be stunning with dramatic skies.

Best for: Budget safaris, photographers seeking dramatic skies, solitude.

May

The rains begin to taper off. Conditions improve as the month progresses. The landscape remains lush and beautiful. Wildlife viewing improves as animals gather around remaining water sources.

Best for: Shoulder season value, green scenery, bird watching.

June

The dry season begins. Grasslands start to dry and thin out. Wildlife viewing improves significantly. The Great Migration herds begin moving north from the Serengeti toward the Maasai Mara. This is a great month for safari before peak crowds arrive.

Best for: Beginning of prime safari season, migration approaching Mara, fewer crowds than July and August.

July

Peak season arrives. The Great Migration herds typically cross into the Maasai Mara. Weather is dry and cool in the mornings. This is one of the best months for wildlife viewing, though prices are at their highest and camps fill quickly.

Best for: Great Migration in the Mara, excellent game viewing, cool weather.

August

Peak season continues. The migration herds are spread across the northern Mara. River crossings can occur at any time. This is the busiest month for tourism. Advance booking is essential, ideally 6 to 12 months ahead.

Best for: Great Migration river crossings, prime wildlife viewing.

September

Dry conditions continue. The migration remains in the Mara. September offers similar wildlife viewing to August but with slightly fewer visitors. Weather is warm and dry. This is one of the best months overall for a Kenya safari.

Best for: Great Migration, excellent weather, slightly fewer crowds than August.

October

The dry season continues into early October. The migration herds begin moving south toward the Serengeti as the short rains approach. Late October can see the start of the short rains. This is a transitional month with good value.

Best for: Migration still present early in the month, shoulder season rates later in the month.

November

The short rains arrive. Afternoon showers are common but often brief. The landscape turns green again. Bird watching is excellent. Prices are lower, and crowds are minimal.

Best for: Low season rates, green landscapes, bird watching, solitude.

December

The short rains typically end by mid-December. Weather becomes warm and dry for the holiday season. Wildlife viewing is good, though vegetation is thicker. Christmas and New Year are busy periods with higher prices.

Best for: Holiday safaris, warm weather, good game viewing.

Best Time for the Great Migration

The Great Migration is a year-round cycle, but the most dramatic river crossings in the Maasai Mara occur between July and October.

  • July to August: Herds cross from the Serengeti into the Mara.
  • September: Herds spread across the northern Mara.
  • October: Herds begin moving south toward the Serengeti.

For the famous Mara River crossings, July through September offer the highest chances of witnessing this spectacle.
